A local boy Michael Mauti has been named as NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
The Saints linebacker blocked a punt in the first quarter against Atlanta Falcons which brought flashbacks and heartwarming memories to the Steve Gleason’s play from 2006.
“That was probably the most electric sports venue I have ever been at,” Mauti said about being in the Superdome nine years ago for Gleason’s block. “I get goose bumps when I think about it, just a numbing sound. I have always looked up to Steve Gleason; he’s a hero of mine. It’s so special that he got to be here, and I grew up wanting to be like him.”
Gleason didn’t win those honors after his blocked punt, although he did take the award in 2002 arter blocking a punt against the Panthers.
Since Michael's block went for a score, it was the first blocked punt and touchdown of the Mandeville native’s career. That was special night because Mauti family (his father Rich also played for New Orleans from 1977-1983) is known from now as first father-son duo to each score a touchdown as a Saint.
